Biographical Note:
Bernhard Weßels, deputy director of the research unit ‘Democracy’ at the WZB, teaches political science at the Free University Berlin. He has is involved and has conducted a number of large-scale comparative projects, including the ‘Comparative Study of Electoral Systems, CSES’ of which he is member of the planning committee, the ‘Post-Communist Citizen’, and ‘Political Representation in Europe’, where he was the director and coordinator of a survey among the members of the European Parliament, and surveys of national Parliaments in 11 member states of the Union; and he was a co-coordinator of a survey among the candidates to the European Parliament in 1994. He has conducted three times a survey among the members of the German Bundestag, and three German election studies, and is member of the board of directors of the German Society for Electoral Research. He has published nationally and internationally several books in the field of electoral studies, political representation, and interest intermediation, and more than eighty articles and book chapters, several of them reviewed. His present research focuses on elections and political representation.
