Subject: Welcome to the PIREDEU Media Study Open Forum!

Location: European University Institute

The Media Study Team is coordinated out of the University of Amsterdam by Claes de Vreese and the University of Exeter by Susan Banducci. We have been working on campaign media content analysis in European Parliamentary elections since 1999. We seek you input on new and existing themes for the media content analysis.

The goal for the Media Study Team is to capture and code news media coverage of the 2009 European election campaign across all 27 EU member states. This cross-national, multi-lingual data collection effort continues on the data collection efforts of media study conducted during the 1999 and 2004 campaigns.

The analysis of the news media coverage is based on coding of national media outlets by native language speakers and applies the same coding rules in each country and is thus comparable across countries. Both television news and newspapers are coded in each country. With two television news outlets and three newspapers per country, the sample consists of 52 television networks (in Belgium two French and two Flemish stations were included) [LINK TO BROADCAST OUTLETS] and 80 newspapers [LINK TO LIST OF NEWSPAPERS]. For newspapers, three weeks prior to the election are covered and for television the two weeks prior to the election are covered. For the analysis, the entire news program of each station is analyzed. The front page and one random chosen inside page of the newspapers are analyzed. Our unit of coding and of analysis is the individual news story.

Funding is secured to guarantee media coverage in each of the 27 countries of the EU. Because of limitations in funding, we are limited in the number of outlets we can cover and there is a need, for the purposes of comparability, to sample the same media outlets in 2009.

Past themes have included visibility of the campaign, primary and secondary topics, location of news stories, actor and actor evaluations (including evaluations of MEP candidates, the EU and its institutions) and the use of different frames in the presentation of EU news. The 2004 codebook is a here [PLEASE LINK TO THE 2004 CODEBOOK].

We welcome comments on existing themes, proposals on new themes and methods of creating explicit links with the voter and party manifesto components. A guide for the selection of the proposed core set of themes is the wish to maintain continuity with the past studies to allow for longitudinal analysis but we also seek proposals on innovative themes.

Proposals are welcome on the Open Forum from 15 April until 14 June 2008. Following that period, the research team will formulate a draft coding scheme. From July 2008 until January 2009, the forum will function as a space for feedback and discussion on the proposed coding scheme.
